Botanical Poster Series

Poster Design

Overview

This project involved creating a series of 5 botanical posters with a moody, dark atmosphere, challenging the conventional bright and cheerful floral imagery. Each poster was designed to stand alone but also work together as a series. I aimed to evoke a sense of intrigue and depth within the botanical theme, inviting viewers to explore a different side of nature’s beauty.

The final designs used classical paintings from several artists from the National Gallery of Art. These still life artworks had the dark feel that I was looking for. To further emphasise the sense of intrigue, I played around with having select flowers in focus and the rest blurred. Aside from intrigue, this also added some depth to the image, and helped balance them out as they could have appeared too crowded with the full paintings.

I used a mix of typefaces for this project. The main standout was a beautiful script one, which gave a sophisticated feeling along with the imagery. I experimented with mixing this font with another, thicker serif font, which almost reflected the individual flowers picked out to be in focus compared the the others - a sense of uniqueness.
