Fika Poster & Banner Design

Poster Design / Layout Design / Visual Identity

Challenge

The client for this project was looking for a series of three posters, logo design and banner design for their social media accounts, to use for their new business.

With a focus on the Swedish tradition of Fika (the idea of taking a coffee and cake break every so often), the challenge was to find a balance between this traditional side and a cohesive, unique identity.

Solution

Two different directions were proposed to the client. One was a very sleek, Scandinavian look with neutral colours and bold typography, accompanied by warm and inviting images of pastries, coffee, and cake. The second involved a more playful version, which drew on a bolder, warm colour palette and hand-drawn illustrations (similar to those found in Swedish culture) but with a more modern take.

This allowed for discussion and enabled the client to decide whether they really wanted to stick to the strong Swedish roots or try out a more unique look.

Concepts for Idea #1

A focus on bold, Scandinavian minimalism

Concepts for Idea #2

A more playful and inviting feel, unique to the brand

Following these concepts, the client stated that they liked the second idea, especially the colour palette, but had some suggestions. These included:

  • Adding more colour and traditional illustration to the mugs and pastries (and have more Swedish cakes!)

  • Try including a common Swedish pattern on the mugs

  • Only use a handwritten-style font

Illustration experiments with Swedish cakes and mugs

For the logo, the client wanted to keep the hand-written style but wanted a font where the letters and sizing was more consistent - we had originally been using a logo that was handwritten by themself.

Final Poster Designs

The client wanted banners for LinkedIn and their website which were the same style as the posters.
